Commercial energy audits

What is a commercial energy audit?

A commercial energy audit is a detailed examination of a commercial facility and building to:

  • Determine energy usage (current and historical);
  • Identify the equipment, machines and systems driving energy usage;
  • Identify human behavioural patterns driving energy usage trends; and
  • Identify savings opportunities and recommend action to capture these energy savings opportunities.

We seek out and identify inefficiencies in the energy system which are either equipment related or related to human behaviour. The results of our energy audit are documented in an energy audit report which includes a presentation of energy saving measures (ESMs). Recommendations will include modification of human behaviour and existing systems to unlock energy savings.

What we do

We analyse historical usage to identify key trends and isolate the drivers of historical and current energy usage. We interview facility managers and observe human behaviour at the facility and we then endeavour to isolate and quantify energy savings potential in:

  • Lighting systems
  • Air conditioning systems
  • Refrigeration
  • HV/AC systems and controls
  • Building envelope upgrades
  • Electric motors and pumps in use
  • Human behaviour (e.g. air condition left on too long); and
  • Utility rate and billing systems.

This list does not represent an exhaustive list and will vary depending on the facility in question.

N.B.: Whilst the energy audit report may recommend an investment in alternative energy systems clients considering an alternative energy investment must consider our Alternative Energy Investment Advisory and our Energy System Design and Technical Advisory service offerings.

What you gain

A lower energy cost translates into lower operating expenses and higher operating and net profit margins.

Research shows average energy savings of between 10% and 20% and in some cases much higher. It is however impossible to make a reasonable estimate without understanding how the facility in question operates.
